Discovered by BP in 1999, the Holstein oil platform sits in roughly 4,300 feet of water and is the largest of its kind in the world. In 2003, BP began production from the Holstein development, and at peak production was expected to produce more than 100,000 barrels of oil and 90 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Owned jointly by BP and Shell, the Holstein oil platform is located in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, approximately 100 miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana.
